More about Young Heroes Programme
Physical activity is vital to the holistic development of young people and the benefits of sport reach beyond the impact of physical well-being. The Young Heroes Programme is based on physical, mental, emotional and cognitive development of children and adolescents and was originally developed as part of a response to the rising trend of inactivity in young South Africans.
While improving school children’s health through PE and school sport was one of the initial issues addressed, the programme has since developed to become a tool which engage learners and ultimately motivate them to attend school thus increasing learner retention and making PE an essential component of quality education. Physical Education, including life skills, and school sport programmes not only promote physical activity, they also correlate to improved academic performance and provide healthy alternatives to deviant behaviour under the right conditions.
Findings from the Young Heroes Programme show that physical activities in school increase attendance and discipline thereby contributing to better education.
