The humanitarian consequences of violence in Iraqhave been catastrophic leaving some 5.2 million people in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. According to UN figures, 2.6 million people remain displaced in Iraq, with another 3 million now beginning to return to homes and communities devastated by war.

The sectarian Sunni Muslim militia Islamic State (also known as ISIL, ISIS or Daesh) seized control of large swathes of Iraq, persecuting religious minority groups, oppressing women and girls and destroying the country’s political, social and economic structures. While ISIL has largely been defeated in a conventional military sense it leaves a terrible legacy.

In such environments children are increasingly at risk from drugs, crime and recruitment by extremist groups if they do not have positive alternatives. These children are also returning to homes now polluted by the legacy of conflict with landmines, unexploded ordnance and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) now a constant and deadly threat.

Spirit of Soccer uses football to help rebuild safe communities for children in Iraq by providing Mine Risk Education to help them recognize and avoid danger, by organizing positive and healthy sports leagues for Fighting Age Males and by building safe physical spaces for children to play.
