More about Deporte y Convivencia – Sports for Coexistence
Back in nineties Medellin was considered the most violent city in the world; crime, violence, corruption, drug cartels and murder are all characteristics that spring to mind. Nevertheless, few know the story of the city’s regeneration, of how the city has overcome fear and now embraces hope, and fewer the role played by the articulated policy on sports, culture and education.
Medellin Governmental Agency for Sports and Recreation- INDER– was funded in 1993 and ever since has worked for the construction of peace and development through sports. With over 800 community outreach and high-performance facilities, and a wide variety of free programs it serves about 2,000,000 people, reaching the most deprived communities.
Sports for Coexistence is one of the projects of the INDER, It aims to take advantage of human interaction in sports to foster significant social learning and build individual and group life-experiences encouraging the pursuit of peace; starting from simple daily attitudes and then generate a social mobilization that fosters an environment of respect, empowerment and resilience.
