More about Skateistan Cambodia
Skateistan Cambodia uses skateboarding as a tool for empowering youth, to create new opportunities and the potential for change. The NGO focuses on the social inclusion of marginalized youth in Phnom Penh, especially girls and disabled youth.
In Cambodia, children with physical and/or intellectual disabilities are often segregated from society and face significant social stigma, preventing them from participating in leisure activities and accessing basic education. Working closely with local partners, Skateistan Cambodia provides recreational and educational opportunities for youth with disabilities at the skatepark facility, where they are able to participate alongside their peers.
The inequality of women involved in sport and education is also an important social issue that Skateistan Cambodia is addressing by including as many girls as possible. Because skateboarding is such a new sport in Cambodia, it doesn’t have a male dominated stigma attached to it. Through skateboarding, Skateistan Cambodia provides access to necessary education; leadership and life skills that allow marginalized youth to overcome barriers to their inclusion and equality.
