More about Score a Goal against Violence

When Tiempo de Juego first started working with local schools in the community, we asked students to explain what it was like for them to live in “Altos de Cazucá”. Many of them described, through actions and gestures, situations in which they had experienced different types of mistreatment. They spoke of gender and family violence, bullying, murders, and the forced recruitment of young people into gangs.

Their stories described the daily challenges faced by the inhabitants of Cazucá. Residents live in a state of constant fear. Many locals feel that there is a socio-economic stigma that keeps their community marginalized from wealthier Colombians. Some of Cazucá’s inhabitants have internalized this mindset, proliferating a sentiment of resignation among residents regarding violence and mistreatment.

This project draws inspiration from studies conducted by social scientists like B. Kidd (2008) and J. Sugden (2006)that show the positive impact that sports can have on vulnerable communities. These interventions allow participants and the larger community to develop an identity of empowerment and self-awareness, while also serving as a tool for social transformation.
