More about Right To Play Rwanda
Right To Play founded its Rwandan project in September 2003. Centered in the Kigali and Rubavu districts of the Western Province, the project focuses specifically on fighting HIV and AIDS in urban areas. It uses an activity based module called Live Safe, Play Safe to educate and raise awareness of HIV and AIDS.
The programme engages and educates children and young people most at risk, providing them with skills and knowledge that could ultimately save their lives. In our experience, the first step to tackling HIV/AIDS is to dispel ignorance, stigmas and social taboos. Live Safe Play Safe encourages open dialogue between role models and peers, providing information and resources to adolescents and particularly disenfranchised young girls.
Over 50% of participants and leaders on our programmes in Rwanda are female, contributing significantly to its attainment of both the 3rd and 6th Millennium Development Goals. Right To Play’s unique approach trains local leaders to provide structured learning opportunities for children and act as role models and spokespeople in their communities. This utilizes sport for development at a grassroots level and disseminates crucial messages on HIV/AIDS prevention in a way that is locally relevant, powerful and fun.
