More about Improved Girl Child Education Through Football
SEP has improved Girl Child enrolment in formal education. In Africa, girl child had no right to school. It was only left for boys, as girls would provide cheap child labour to support her brother’s education at her own expense! This trend still exists among our community, where girl child education is never a priority.
As a male-dominated culture still burdened by the spurious and antiquated belief that girls have no place in sports & education, very few have the opportunity to play soccer and access basic education in Oyugis region. Without role models, encouraging coaches and education support, most girls lose interest in sports and education at a time in their development physical, mental and social benefits would be most powerful. SEP encourages girls’ social and leadership skills through soccer, and education; helping develop character and self-esteem. SEP has introduced meaningful Girls’ football programme as a platform to empower them and change this myth. They are sensitized on the importance of education in the lives, and literally given the needful support towards this venture. SEP gets into local arrangements with local schools to admit the girls at 50% of the total fees; raised from their SEP supported Agricultural programme.
