More about Diamonds Programme + Yonwabani Socials
Available research on Khayelitsha finds that the average income in this township is approximately R1200.00 (USD$145 or NZD$182) per household, per month to support an average of four dependants.
As such, the domestic economy distorts general access to recreational programmes and facilities.
Per school, about 2000 youth under20 years-old attend. Yet, over 95% of the township’s schools have very poor, unusable recreational facilities thus most schools are deficient in this area of development.
While these schools depend on minimal government initiative, youth are negated of alternative skills such as through sports, arts etc. Due to the absence of such programmes, youth are extremely vulnerable to socioeconomic challenges, thus prevalence of gangsterism-based violence in the recent 2years.
Township schools like in Khayelitsha, remain in dire need of new facilities, refurbishment of existing adequate facilities and properly-strategised programmes inside schools and extra club activities.
The Diamonds Programme is a multisport leisure programme designed for the residents of Khayelitsha and the surrounding areas.
