More about Capoeira Youth
Capoeira Youth uses the Brazilian martial art and dance- Capoeira- to give disadvantaged young people a healthy and non violent alternative after and during school (PE). We work in the most deprived areas of London and in Bogota, Colombia (where we have our sister project) where the need for activities to help young people (aged 12-20) engage in positive, peaceful and drug free lifestyle is crucial.
Youth for Youth/Capoeira Youth run programmes where the idea/aim is to give young people an opportunity to make a healthy and productive choice about their life. These include:
1. Weekly Capoeira (martial arts, dance and music) classes with qualified instructors designed to quickly develop the young people’s confidence and physical skills and abilities.
2. Weekly key worksessions with the instructors and youth workers to offer mentoring and motivational support, including, team-building, resolving feelings of conflict and anger, understanding the effects of peer pressure, negotiation and conflict resolution skills and confidence and self-esteem.
3. Drug awareness – understanding types of drugs, the effects of drugs and alcohol on the mind and body and how to minimise harm.
4. Healthy life choices – balanced diet, physical activity, emotional health and wellbeing, staying safe, opportunities for enjoyment and achievement.
We also look within our programme and the young people who "graduate" from our project to become involved as youth leaders and coaches themselves, and to pass on what they have learnt whilst being with our project. In Newham, we work in partnership with Community Links (one of England's top 100 charities) and we also work with a PRU (New Directions) delivering PE sessions during school hours. Since May 2008 we have worked successfully with over 200 young people in London and that number is ever increasing.
