  • Overview of Project:
The physical and emotional effects of childhood obesity are overwhelming: cancer, cardiovascular disease, depression, eating disorders, low self-confidence, substance abuse, etc. For girls, it’s worse, especially African-American and Hispanic girls. Unfortunately, despite increased awareness of childhood obesity and its consequences, opportunities to play are disappearing. States across the country are facing unprecedented budget crises, and are struggling to maintain even the most basic services. GoGirlGo! picks up where the public sector has dropped off. We are expanding opportunities for underserved girls, both nationally and in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, and Seattle through the distribution of grants and by working in concert with 2,500 girl-serving organizations to ensure that girls have free access to physical activity programs. The good news is that childhood obesity can be prevented through a combination of education and physical activity. The Women’s Sports Foundation’s GoGirlGo! initiative gives girls the opportunity to be physically active, which in turn boosts their self-esteem and builds character, and helps them understand that sedentary lifestyles often have dire consequences. Its award-winning educational curriculum (available at no charge) teaches girls about how to confront and eliminate harmful health behaviors, the importance of physical activity and the development of leadership skills.
