- Overview of Project:
The LBACP is a grass-roots social inclusion charity that grew out of local demand. It is based in Haringey and provides an alternative GCSE, sports based, curriculum tailored to the needs of 36 disaffected, violent and alienated students from the ages of 13-17. Our approach is holistic and we work with many local schools, sports clubs, the police, Youth offending Service, Mencap, local mentors, sex and drugs awareness councillors, church groups, local businesses, grant funding organisations and many other public and private partnerships. We use boxing and other sports to re-engage our students who are at high risk of entry into the Youth Justice System. Our curriculum includes Maths, English, Art, ICT, Statistics, Law, History and Music. We follow normal school hours and terms. We also teach our students basic life skills such as respect for others, decision-making and anger management. We also provide vocational courses, mentoring and field trips to places such as Oxford University in order to break down barriers that for our students, help them re-integrate into to the local community and empower them to take positive life decisions for themselves. We are starting our second branch in Hackney later this year and our model is fully replicable.
