  • Overview of Project:
Liga FOS (Football for Social Opportunity League) is a project that promotes social development through football, in vulnerable neighbourhoods in Buenos Aires suburbs. To achieve this goal, the project has three components: a) two football tournaments a year with the participation of 19 organizations and sports clubs from three different localities and almost 5000 children and adolescent from 7 to 16 years old; b) training and capacity building to community based organizations and their social entrepreneurs; c) raising awareness about football as a tool for development through promotion and communication actions. The main strategies developed to achieve these goals are: networking among participants and with other stakeholders within each neighbourhood; as well as the rebuilding of communitarian bonds and promotion of values. Football is one of the most popular sports in Argentina, and particularly in poor neighbourhoods it is the most favourite activity in which kids and adults get involved. We use football as a tool to create opportunities to the most vulnerable population and to address problems such violence, addictions, social exclusion, lack of education, etc.

Dear Mario: Thank you very much for your comment. Regarding your questions and doubts: 1) The other organizations taking part of the league are social clubs and grassroots organizations, you can check this out in www.fundacionfude.org.ar and see the list of participants. All of them work in vulnerable neighborhoods, mostly affected by poverty, unemployment, lack of access to basic services. There is a description of this situation in the website. 2) The costs involved in the project is the organization of tournaments (travel expense, sport equipment, referees for matches, administrative expenses, among other); the training and capacity building workshops, and the communication platform (which includes a periodical supplement in a newspaper and a radio magazine). We finance the program through sponsors and also values in kind (equipment, experts). The main contributors to this initiative are Nike Argentina, Avina Foundation, Switzerland Embassy and the National Secretariat of Sports. 3) We have two tournaments during the whole year with a duration of 10 months in total. The kids play every weekend, Saturday and Sunday. 4) We provide training and capacity building workshops on communitarian communication, institutional development, a training for referees and football clinics for trainers. They normally have a program for 3 or 4 months each, with one meeting a week. The duration of each meeting is 3 hours, and clinics 4 hours. It is all for now, if you have more comments, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you very much for your interest and all your comments!! Looks very good to me. I've heard about this project last year in Argentina and even met some of the people that are doing it, very nice guys. However I don't know all the details, maybe you can fill me the gaps please? My doubts are: 1- who are the other organizations taking part of the league? Are they NGOs, football clubs, others? Are they all from vulnerable neighbourhoods? 2-What costs are involved in the project? How do you finance it? Did you/do you receive any grants or sponsorships so far? 3-The tournaments take place twice a year, or you have two tournaments during the whole year (like playing every weekend)? 4-What type of trainings you give to the trainers and social entrepreneurs? Where and how many times they take place a year? Thanks a lot and good luck! Cheers
