  • Overview of Project:
Developed by StreetGames, this concept in volunteering helps 16-25 year old develop their sports coaching and community leadership skills through volunteering at their neighbourhood sports projects. The format and objectives of the project proved so inspiring that it attracted the backing of The Co-operative as part of its social goals programme. The Co-operative StreetGames Young Volunters programme was formally created. The programme operates in the 20% most deprived areas of England & Wales, as well as pockets of health inequalities and anti-social behaviour. Some volunteers are recruited from existing StreetGames projects. Others are recruited through outreach and linking with partners at a local level, including youth clubs and other organisations working with young people. The volunteers have access to unique training and development resources to help them gain additional qualifications. For many it is a route into paid employment, for others, it leads to them setting up their own youth led schemes/ initiatives. The programme successfully tackles the issue of social exclusion by using volunteering as a mechanism for integrating young people into the heart of their community. The volunteers themselves are then able to reach out to and inspire other young people through sport.
