  • Overview of Project:
Futbol con Corazon is an after school program for boys and girls, between five and sixteen years old, who live in the high-risk neighborhoods of Barranquilla, Colombia. These children lack mentors, extracurricular activities, and are exposed to risky activities and behavior, such as violence, drugs, prostitution, unsafe sex, and gangs. Many are malnourished and do not have regular access to medical and/or dental services. These factors lead to low levels of self-esteem, and lack of dreams and hope for the future, which manifests itself in low levels of continuation of higher education and lack of employment opportunities which could improve their life situation. Joining Futbol con Corazon programs is a possible for all children between the age of 5-16 in the neighborhood of our interventions, pending school enrollment. However, since our program cannot serve all the children, we collaborate with school teachers and community leaders to sign up those children who would benefit the most from attending the program. The program is composed of three pillars: 1) soccer training and neighborhood tournaments in 'soccer for peace' methodology, 2) workshops to promote for core values: honesty, respect, tolerance and solidarity, and 3) balanced nutrition for participants.
