UD Team believes in the connection between physical health and mental health and between mental health and academic success. UD Team is a unique school model that is designed with this premise in mind. We use the power of sports and teams to help young people become stronger and healthier so that they can reach their full academic potential.
Graduation rates across New York City are just over 50%, and for African-American and Hispanic students in Brooklyn, the rates are in the 40s. For students who do not find success in 9th grade, the dropout rate increases to 85%. This staggering number is currently addressed by a portfolio of Transfer Schools created by the Department of Education, but these schools only accept students 17 years of age or older. There are thousands of students ages 15-17 who are already off-track to graduate, with have no options or alternatives. UD Team is the first school ever to reach out exclusively to this population.
We use sports to energize, educated and empower these youth so that they can reconnect to school, get back on track to graduate and reach their full potential.
