New Heights is leveling the field by addressing the root causes of poverty through education and basketball-based youth-development. Our core program, College Bound, offers year-round comprehensive middle and high school academic support, leadership development and basketball training to nearly 200 student-athletes annually. We harness their love of the game by fielding basketball teams and supplying them with academic enrichment, college prep programs and community-based service initiatives. We do our work on the court, in the classroom and in the community.
In the underserved NYC neighborhoods we target, 1 out of 3 families live in poverty and only 33% of Latino and 26% of African-American students graduate high school in four years. The economic benefits of education are well documented with high school graduates earning 38% more than high school dropouts per year and college graduates earning 64% more. Since 2005, we have maintained a 100% high school graduation rate and a 75% college graduation rate. We are addressing urban generational poverty in a concrete way, resulting in an effective break in the cycle of poverty for hundreds of New Heights alumni and their families.
