More about Sport for LIFE All Island
Obesity has become a global epidemic and health concern.
In Northern Ireland 20% of 4-5 year old school children are overweight or obese.
The Health Behaviours in School Children survey (HBSC, 2006) revealed that over half of primary school age children in the Republic of Ireland did not achieve the recommended level of physical activity and 22% are overweight or obese. By 15 years of age, almost 9 out of 10 girls and seven out of 10 boys don't achieve the recommended level.
Eurydice Report (2013) reveals children in the ROI receive less Physical Education than all of their European counterparts.
The University of Ulster’s, ‘Sport for LIFE All Island ’ (SFLAI) programme is a 12 week sport and physical activity (SPA) and health intervention targeting P5 children from the most disadvantaged primary schools (PS) in Ireland.
SFLAI has been designed to address overweight and obesity levels among children in these PS’s by:
• increasing levels of SPA
• increasing understanding of a nutritional diet for health
• promoting physical, social and mental well being.
