More about Orlando Magic
The Orlando Magic is committed to helping children reach their full potential by investing resources in the areas of education, the arts, and health and wellness. The organization is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment in which our fans, community partners and employees feel welcome, valued and appreciated. The Magic have a number of projects/initiatives that address these specific focus areas including the construction of our Orlando Magic Community Gyms and City of Orlando renovation projects designed to address all three areas.
Through research, it was discovered that obesity rates among youth in Central Florida was on the rise, children were struggling to pass the Florida Comprehensive Assesment Test (FCAT) with failing scores in reading and math, and limited school funding and resources caused arts and sports to be pulled from many schools. In addition, due to a lack of recreational and educational facilities in neighborhoods, teens were more likely to engage in juvenile crimes and gangs and teen pregnancy was on the rise.
The goal with the construction of the Magic/Orange County Community Gyms and renovation of the community centers reading and learning labs is to provide at-risk communities with more access to resources to assist in academic and arts programs as well as create recreational programs to integrate physical activity in the lifestyles of children. Other programs such as the Magic’s Baskets for Books program, Journey to the Arts, Magic Fit, and multicultural platforms (Black History Month, Noche Latina, India Day), are all strategically aligned to address these social issues touching various numbers of the Central Florida community.
