More about Figure Skating in Harlem
Through educational workshops designed to boost student’s core academic and study skills, FSH helps girls develop the foundation to graduate from high school and enter college. Besides skating, all students participate in public speaking, financial literacy, nutrition & fitness, and skating theory workshops, plus mentoring and internships, leadership activities, college prep workshops at Columbia University, career week, and our new16-week SAT test preparation program for high-school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Every week, students participate in a minimum of 7 hours of homework help, off-ice education, skating instruction, and dance.
Our program helps prepare our students for academic success. Students have received academic merit scholarships to prestigious private schools like Horace Mann and Dana Hall, and most enter 4-year colleges like Wesleyan, Spelman, Penn State, and the University of Rochester. By participating in a holistic program that combines figure skating with academic enrichment, girls are engaged in an extraordinary physical, mental, and social process of self-discovery and develop a keen interest in excelling at whatever they do. NYC has one of the lowest high school graduation rates nationwide and the achievement gap persists: Just over 50% of Latino/a students and 54% of black students graduated on time, compared to 74% of white students and 77% of Asian American students.
