More about Figure Skating in Harlem
For 15 years, FSH has empowered hundreds of under-served Black and Latina girls by offering them rare educational and athletic opportunities through the elite sport of figure skating. Figure skating, like many sports, has traditionally been out of reach, especially for girls growing up in low income, inner-city communities. By exposing them to the physical outlet and discipline of ice skating and combining it with rigorous classroom work (in areas from nutrition to personal finance and public speaking), our girls develop confidence, leadership qualities and critical skills that directly impact their success in school and in life.
FSH helps rectify the inequitable allocation of sports opportunities for girls in NYC. At our own home rink in Harlem, we’ve obtained 15% (4.5 hrs.) of the ice time, which is traditionally allocated to boys ice hockey from elite prep schools. By working to obtain just a few more hours of ice time, in the coming year we hope to increase our enrolment by one-third allowing many more at-risk inner city girls the chance to develop the essential skills – focus, determination, teamwork, and goal setting – that are critical to future success.
