Beyond Sport Unveils London Legacy Award Shortlist

Beyond Sport, in partnership with the Mayor of London, has announced the shortlist for the London Legacy Award – the search to find the best project or initiative in the capital which uses sport as a vehicle for positive social change.

The Beyond Sport London Legacy Award will provide a tangible legacy for Beyond Sport's Host City for 2009 with the winning project receiving a package of funding, provided jointly by Beyond Sport and the Mayor of London, over three years.

From 40 entries, the following five projects were chosen by the judging panel, comprising of representatives from Beyond Sport, City Hall and the Evening Standard, to go forward to a public vote of Londoners who will choose the winner.

London Legacy Award Shortlist

•    Capoeira Youth (Newham)

•    Coping Through Football (Waltham Forest)

•    Ebony Horse Club (Brixton)

•    London Boxing Academy Community Project (Haringey)

•    Street League (Newham)

Voting closes on Friday, June 26 and the winner will be announced by Mayor of London Boris Johnson at the Beyond Sport Summit during a special presentation ceremony on the evening of July 8.

The unprecedented Summit, which runs in total from July 7-9, will feature a number of influential global figures including Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu; Sir Richard Branson, President of Virgin Atlantic; Prince Faisal Al Hussein of Jordan; Michael Johnson, multi-Olympic gold medallist; and Wilfred Lemke, United Nations Special Advisor to the Secretary General.

The event will also be attended by leaders from business, sport, social innovation, and government with high-profile representatives from over 250 companies and organisations from across the world already confirmed to come to London for the Summit.

Nick Keller, Founder of Beyond Sport, commented: “Each of the 5 projects that made the shortlist for the Beyond Sport London Legacy Award shared the common attribute of having a fantastic community leader at its helm. What we’re hoping is by holding up these fantastic projects across London that others will be inspired by the potential of sport to address some of the capital’s most pressing social issues.”

The launch of the London Legacy Award is being supported by a print marketing campaign run in partnership with the Evening Standard.

Beyond Sport is partnered by Barclays Spaces for Sports and Virgin Atlantic.
