Beyond Sport receives entries worldwide
After just two weeks of being open for entries, the Beyond Sport Awards have received application submissions from a diverse span of countries, sports, and initiatives.
Projects that have entered thus far are based in countries from all areas of the world, ranging from India, to the United States, to Colombia, to Israel, to Australia. Africa has been the continent from where most of the projects hail, with submissions from Zambia, Uganda, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana.
The origins of these projects are not the only aspects about them that are diverse. Sports such as kayaking, football, rugby, cricket and athletics are used by the entrants to stimulate social good in their respective areas. The projects’ missions tackle everything from economic underdevelopment to HIV/AIDS to homelessness.
The Award categories aim to encompass this range of initiatives by covering the entire sporting spectrum of corporate and social responsibility, change and philanthropy. Many projects have also applied for the Best New Project category- which was created specifically for those initiatives that are under two years old.
Despite the already impressive collection of projects that have applied, there is still plenty of time to submit an application, as the close for entries will be in March. Groups and individuals from across the globe can enter their social change projects in the Beyond Sport Awards via www.beyondsport.org, the initiative’s community-driven website where social entrepreneurs in sport can also share their ideas and insights with each other.
A shortlist of entries will go before the Beyond Sport Judging Panel of Ambassadors, chaired by Tony Blair, who will choose the winner of each category.
The winners in eight categories will receive funding and long-term support to help them to become fully sustainable. All winners will be announced at the inaugural Beyond Sport Summit to be held in London on 8-9 July 2009.
