NBA passes its support to Beyond Sport
The National Basketball Association has announced its support and praise of Beyond Sport’s global endeavours.
Championing the efforts of Beyond Sport, NBA Commissioner David J. Stern wrote to Tony Blair, Chairman of the Beyond Sport Ambassadors, “As you know, sport has the tremendous potential to bridge divides and unite people working toward positive change. It is something that the NBA believes in quite strongly, and I am encouraged by the promise of the Beyond Sport initiative. I congratulate you and those involved in this program for the work done so far.”
The NBA has been involved in efforts to bring about positive change, as well, launching a global responsibility initiative called NBA Cares in 2005. Stern referred to its programmes such as Basketball without Borders and the Jr. NBA/Jr. WBNBA, which encourage development and teach important life skills like teamwork sportsmanship and respect.
“The power of sport goes beyond what any one person or organization can do alone,” he wrote. “Beyond Sport provides a voice to get the message out, to share ideas, and to network all in an effort to take this movement to new heights.”
“Hopefully the celebration of the achievements related to this cause will inspire thousands to carry the torch into the future.”
