ICC announces support of Beyond Sport

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has joined the ever-growing ranks of international sports federations to emphatically announce their support for the Beyond Sport global initiative.

Writing to Tony Blair, Chairman of the Beyond Sport Ambassadors, the International Cricket Council President David Morgan warmly endorsed the Beyond Sport vision:

“Just over five years ago, the International Cricket Council became the first international sports federation to enter into a partnership with UNAIDS to help raise awareness and reduce stigma about HIV and AIDS.

“This partnership opened our eyes to the power of sport to make a positive difference across continents, countries and communities and we have continued to build on this over the years by joining forces with UNICEF and the Global Media AIDS Initiative and providing active support to the Unite for Children, Unite Against AIDS campaign.

“It is now a common feature of our major events that leading players take time out of their practice schedules to interact with young people and community projects. Positive messages from the game’s icons are also regularly broadcast around the world.

“The ICC recognises that sport has an impact beyond the field of play and it is important this impact is harnessed in a positive way.

“In cricket we are constantly seeking to reach beyond our game’s traditional boundaries to break down barriers to participation and promote empowerment and self-confidence in young boys and girls.

“In identifying inspiring stories from the world of sport and sharing them with a global audience, the Beyond Sport initiative has the potential to enhance the positive impact that our games can have.

“Beyond Sport is an ambitious and laudable project that is closely aligned to the International Cricket Council’s objectives and we wish it every success.”

The ICC joins a host of international sports federations and rights holders in endorsing Beyond Sport including the likes of the International Olympic Committee (IOC); the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF); Major League Baseball (MLB) and the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
