Dr. Auma Obama - The Ambassadors
CARE USA’s Sports for Social Change Initiative Technical Advisor
Dr Auma Obama is CARE USA’s Sports for Social Change Initiative Technical Advisor. She advises on and coordinates all activities related to the CARE Sports for Social Change Initiative (SSCI). This includes the development of a Sport for Social Change Network (SSCN) in East Africa – part of a global initiative that also has a presence in Brazil, South Africa and the United Kingdom - to promote the integration and multiple approaches in using sports as a tool for social change within the relevant program areas of Youth Empowerment, Education Attainment, Gender Equality, HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention, Conflict Resolution and Peace Building, as well as Life Skills Development for vulnerable and At-Risk Youth, in particular girls. Sport is used to integrate and influence positive behavior change that will result in equitably participation, in particular of girls, in economic, social and political opportunities and have influence in decision-making at all levels.
Dr Obama is pioneering this new Initiative in East Africa and has been with CARE since July 2007. She joined ECARMU from the United Kingdom where she was working as Children’s Services Engagement Officer under Local Government. Previously she moved from Project Management to working as a Children’s Trust Participation Coordinator and as a Careers and Education Advisor for young people not in education, training or employment.
Currently Dr Obama sits on the boards of Women Win, an organisation that promotes gender equity through sports and of the 50x15 Foundation, a foundation that creates the means and opportunity for communities in high-growth markets to participate in and benefit from the “life services” accessible by the Internet and computing capabilities. She is also a Beyond Sport Ambassador. Beyond Sport is a global organization that promotes, develops and funds the use of sport to create positive social change across the world.
