Steelers cornerback Will Gay has been personally affected by domestic violence, losing his mother at the hands of an abusive stepfather when he was just 8 years old. He has translated the pain of his loss into a platform to help others by partnering with the Women’s Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh. Gay is the national spokesman for the center’s new danger assessment app, RUSafe, which was announced at a press conference at the team’s practice facility in October.
In a show of support, the rest of the defensive backs and Head Coach Mike Tomlin joined Gay at the press conference. After a Pittsburgh launch, the app became available nationwide Nov. 1 via smartphone app stores. Gay has been involved with the center since he originally joined the Steelers in 2007.
In addition to the local efforts, he also appears in the “No More” PSA campaign, featuring 23 current and former NFL players, which airs during game broadcasts. For more information, visit www.RUSafe.net.
