USTA & Partners Host Net Generation Virtual Summer Camp

July 24, 2020

With COVID-19 and social distancing disrupting the running of traditional summer camps, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) held its first-ever Net Generation Virtual Summer Camp July 20 through today to provide a fun, free and online alternative to traditional camps, while still incorporating many of the same camp experiences.

Held via the USTA’s Facebook and Twitter pages, the camp was aimed at 6–12-year olds and included two daily 30-minute sessions focused on building athletic skills, character development and tennis fundamentals through games and heart-pumping activities.

“Since the pandemic, the USTA and various sports across the county have been able to engage with key audiences in creative ways through the power of social media. As a result of that, we are proud to champion the inaugural Net Generation Virtual Summer Camp and provide families with healthy, fun, and safe activities to enjoy this summer,” said Craig Morris, USTA’s Chief Executive.

“This program will be not just about activities and skill development,” Morris added. “It will also help guide self-discovery and learning.”

The sessions incorporate Net Generation’s curriculum of games and drills modifiable for beginner, intermediate and advanced players, allowing all family members to take part. It also provides those who normally wouldn’t have access to tennis coaching and facilities the chance to learn the game at home.  Professional tennis player appearances, giveaways and prizes occurred throughout the week and campers also received a digital activity book via e-mail upon registration.

To add variety to each day, Net Generation also partnered with United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, USA Football, PGA of America (part of USA Golf), U.S. Soccer, USA Baseball and U.S. Figure Skating, representatives of which acted as “counselors” providing campers with the benefits of multi-sport play with special guests from the respective sports.

"Partnering with our national governing bodies is essential for the future of our young athletes. Through our American Development Model [ADM], we emphasize the importance of multi-sport play to ensure our youth is on the path of success to develop a healthy and lifelong relationship with staying active,” said Leah Friedman, USTA Net Generation National Manager.

“Our partners are excited to collaborate with us on our camp initiative as we develop cross-functional skills that can take you from the field, skating rink and golf course, to the tennis court and vice versa."

The USTA also brought Nemours Children’s Health System on board to provide campers with healthy nutritional and hydration tips, as well as easy-to-follow recipes for the kids to try at home.
