Supreme committee open football pitch in Lekhnath
The Vice President of Nepal, Nanda Bahadur Pun, has opened the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) football pitch in the Kaski district of Nepal. Located in Bhandardhik village of Lekhnath Muncipality, the pitch is the third of the series of four pitches in Nepal funded by SC’s Generation Amazing programme.
The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) is the organization that ensures that all preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ align with Qatar’s other development imperatives, as described in the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 2011-2016. Along with its stakeholders, the SC is tasked with delivering stadiums and other infrastructure for an amazing 2022 FIFA World Cup™ that leaves a lasting legacy for Qatar, the region and the world.
Generation Amazing is the SC’s flagship programme that uses the opportunity of Qatar hosting the 2022 FIFA World CupTM and the power of football as a catalyst for social change to educate and empower the next generation in Qatar and across the world. The programme has been operational in Nepal, Pakistan and Jordan in addition to Qatar. In Nepal, the Generation Amazing programme, is managed by Right to Play and delivered by Mercy Corps in Nepal.
Also in attendance at the pitch opening event was SC Assistant Secretary General Nasser Al Khater. Representatives from strategic and delivery partners Right to Play and Mercy Corps, the former national football team captain of Nepal, government officials, local civil society and more than 300 youth participated in the function.
“We are delighted to be continuing our sustained work in Nepal with this pitch opening in an area of great importance to our Generation Amazing programme,” said Isabel Gultresa, CSR Senior Manager at the SC. “The community in Lekhnath has come together to help mark the opening of the pitch and we look forward to the pitch being used in order to see the full benefits of our programme being transferred to the local community.”
Managed by Right to Play and delivered by Mercy Corps in Nepal, Generation Amazing has three components – pitch, people and programmes – and is targeted at migrant workers, schoolchildren and vulnerable youth from different local communities.
Generation Amazing started Football for Development initiatives, which consist of the use of drills and games through football as a tool to promote positive behavioural change, in Lekhnath in January 2015 with Adarsha Youth Club as the local stakeholder. It has transformed the lives of over 1,000 local youth, 50 percent of whom are women. Two youngsters from Bhandardhik were selected as Generation Amazing Youth Ambassadors in the initial phase – they received Football for Development training aimed at enhancing their leadership potential in their local community.
Generation Amazing has positively impacted the lives of more than 3,000 youth and children in Makwanpur, Kaski and Kailali districts through trained coaches and a total of six Ambassadors across Nepal.
Two Generation Amazing pitches in Makwanpur district were opened on 28 April and 3 May and the fourth in Nepal is scheduled for launch in Kailali district on 10 June.
Generation Amazing is delivered through three primary initiatives: Inclusive Generation, Healthy Generation and Green Generation designed to address the priority issues of vulnerability, health & well-being and environmental sustainability, thus enabling a positive and sustainable generational change through football.
