Recognizing 9/11 at the Beyond Sport Global Awards

On September 12, at One World Observatory in New York, the Beyond Sport Global Awards will recognize amazing individuals and projects from around the world that are using sport to transform their communities and the world for the better.

But, one day before, One World Trade and people around the world will observe the 17th anniversary of the devastating 9/11 attacks. In recognition, we’re pleased to announce that we’ve partnered with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum for a special remembrance moment during the Global Awards ceremony and to showcase the role sport played in uniting so many – athletes and fans – post September 11, 2001.

We’re honored to have 9/11 Memorial & Museum President & CEO Alice M. Greenwald attend to present one of our Global Awards and to share some thoughts about the intersection of sports and 9/11.

“As we saw so vividly 17 years ago, and as explored in our current special exhibition, Comeback Season: Sports After 9/11, sports provided a respite from grief, a sense of community, and the promise of normalcy, even as we reeled from the shock and devastation of the terrorist attacks,” said Greenwald. “I am honored to join Beyond Sport in celebrating the unique power of sports to heal, bring people together in support of one another, and exemplify the strength and resilience of the human spirit.”

Some description

Through commemoration, exhibitions, and educational programs, The National September 11 Memorial & Museum, a nonprofit in New York City, remembers and honors the 2,983 people killed in the horrific attacks of September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993 as well as those who risked their lives to save others and all who demonstrated extraordinary compassion in the aftermath of the attacks.

Newly opened in June 2018, the special exhibition Comeback Season: Sports After 9/11 explores how sports and athletes helped to unite the country, consoled a grieving nation and gave us a reason to cheer again following the 2001 attacks. The exhibition illustrates many iconic moments well as previously untold stories that highlight the unifying force of sports in American life. Acknowledging that the world would never be the same, sports provided the opportunity for healing and relief.
