NYU SPS selects newest research grant winners

10 organizations holding 10 in-depth discussions on sport’s role on 10 timely topics

During last week’s Beyond Sport United Conference, we once again held our signature 10Roundtables event in partnership with our host and research partner, NYU’s School of Professional Studies (SPS). Taking place over four hours, 100 senior leaders and decision-makers from across sport, corporate, academia, non-profit, government and social enterprise sectors, took part in a series of structured conversations that challenged them to look at key topics from different perspectives.

Encompassing everything from digital literacy and promoting humanitarianism in refugee camps, to youth justice and promoting healthy lifestyles, the delegates lively discussions resulted in actionable solutions that use sport to tackle global challenges in exciting new ways.

Following presentations from each of the tables, NYU judges awarded the three top-scoring tables (those that conveyed the most tangible opportunities for impact) with Spring 2019 research support from Masters Students in the Preston Robert Tisch Institute for Global Sport. Past winners of the coveted research include: Chevron (sport and STEM education), EY and UN Women (advancing gender equality) and SMG Insight (developing a social responsibility measurement tool).

And the 2018 winners are…

SAP, which focused on how digital literacy is playing a role in the sport industry and how this can create an opportunity to positively impact society as a whole.
• The National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention, which focused on how the sport community can unite to address one of America's most pressing issues - mental health.
Foley & Lardner, which focused on the social responsibility conundrum – finding the crossroads between commercialization and culture -- within esports.

Leading up to the Spring, researchers from NYU Sports and Society and the Tisch Institute will meet with the winning organizations to finalize 2019 plans. At the end of the semester, the students will present the research to the organizations, which will then have the chance to explore further professional research support from NYU. Congratulations to the winning organizations!
