Beyond Sport Recommends

Part Three

May 8, 2020

Play may be on pause for the time being, but you can still get your sports fix while staying at home. Here are a few recommendations on what we're watching, reading and listening to at the moment.

Something to inspire: Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl)

This Academy Award-winning documentary short showcases the incredible work of Beyond Sport Global Award-winning organization, Skateistan. The 2019 film follows a class of young girls from disadvantaged neighborhoods in war-torn Kabul over the course of 15 years as they learn to read and write and grow together in confidence through the joy of skateboarding.

Something to listen to: Flying Coach

Two legendary coaches, Steve Kerr of the Golden State Warriors and Pete Carroll of the Seattle Seahawks, sit down for weekly discussions in which they offer up their unique perspectives on leadership, mentorship and competing as championship-level coaches in the NBA and NFL. The podcast is also raising money for COVID-19 relief.

Something for your next binge: Sunderland ‘Til I Die

This intimate docuseries follows English soccer club Sunderland through the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons as they try to bounce back after relegation from the Premier League. With two full seasons on Netflix, this gripping behind the scenes portrait of the ups and (mostly) downs of professional sports will have you glued to your TV.

Something for the Zoom book club: Netherland

If you’re just not feeling up to reading another athlete biography but still need a fix of sport, this Award-winning novel from Joseph O’Neill may be just what you need. Set in New York in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks, “Netherland” follows two immigrants as they seek to find community and refuge in a local cricket club.

Something for the whole family: Remember The Titans

Dubbed “the best movie of all time” by our very own Network and Foundation Manager, Peter Hughes, this 2000 Disney movie follows a high school football team in Virginia in 1971 as they play their first season following school integration. It’s got everything you’d want in a movie: inspirational speeches, a sensational Denzel Washington performance and one of the best soundtracks ever. Available to stream on Disney +.
