More about Leveling the Playing Field: The GOALS Literacy Project
Using soccer as a platform for development, the GOALS ‘Leveling the Playing Field’ Literacy Project uses soccer as a tool to teach basic literacy and numeracy skills to children and adults living in extreme poverty in rural Haiti who lack access to education.
UNICEF reports only 53% of adults in Haiti are literate. School fees can exceed annual incomes and rural areas are cut off from the schooling system. In the small fishing village of Destra, there are no formal jobs and little commerce. There are no clinics, electricity or paved roads. Nearly all the adults are low- or non-literate and just 72% of children are enrolled in school.
The ‘Leveling the Playing Field’ project seeks to create the village’s first fully literate generation, thereby improving local leadership, health and future earning potential.
For rural children who cannot attend school and adults who never had the opportunity, GOALS provides their first chance to become literate, establishing a more equitable playing field for everyone.
